What if the most extraordinary sexual experiences of your life began when you stopped trying to make anything happen?

By Dakini Leah, CTSE, CMedT, B.A. Psy.

There are two ways to make love. One is to climb the mountain, plant your flag on the summit, and congratulate yourself on another successful expedition. The other is to discover that the mountain is alive, that the trees are whispering your name, the earth is breathing beneath you, and the stars have been waiting all eternity for you to notice them.

One is performance. The other is presence.

And, my dear lovers, if you’ve been spending your sexual lives racing toward the summit, you may have missed an entire enchanted forest along the way.

The Bedroom Has Become a Performance Arena

Let’s face it. Most of us have been taught to approach sex like an Olympic event. There’s the warm-up, the main event, the grand finale, and, if all goes according to plan, a standing ovation. Or at least a satisfied sigh and a trip to the bathroom.

We have inherited an astonishing collection of sexual expectations. Men are supposed to get erections on command, maintain them like well-trained soldiers, and deliver orgasms with the reliability of Old Faithful. Women are supposed to become instantly aroused, respond enthusiastically to every touch, and achieve spectacular climaxes that would make a fireworks manufacturer weep with envy. And both partners are supposed to arrive at the finish line together, preferably before the kids wake up.

Good heavens. No wonder so many people find sex stressful!

Even our language betrays us. We talk about getting someone aroused, giving someone an orgasm, achieving climax, and making our partner come. It’s all so terribly industrious.

Somewhere along the way, lovemaking became another item on our endless to-do lists. Another task to accomplish. Another opportunity to succeed or fail.

And although our culture is finally beginning to recognize that the journey is more important more than the destination, most couples are left scratching their heads. What does that actually mean? If we’re not trying to get somewhere, what on earth are we supposed to DO?

Ah, Beloveds. That’s where Tantra comes in.

Presence: Where the Divine Slips Between the Sheets

Tantra offers a rather radical proposition: The most extraordinary experiences of love and pleasure are not necessarily things we create. They are things we become available to experience.

And the doorway is presence.

Presence is the practice of bringing your awareness fully into the moment you’re living. It means noticing the warmth of your lover’s skin beneath your palm, the subtle rhythm of their breathing, the tiny movement of their lips as they smile, the fragrance of their hair, the weight of their body beside yours, and the delicious sensation of being touched by someone who genuinely wants to touch you.

It also means becoming aware of what’s happening inside you. Perhaps there’s a little flutter of desire in your belly, a tenderness in your heart, a memory drifting through your mind, or a sudden impulse to laugh, cry, kiss, whisper, or simply lie perfectly still. Instead of judging these experiences, trying to change them, or rushing past them toward something supposedly more important, you welcome them. All of them.

Your body, your heart, your mind, your memories, your emotions, your humor, your dreams, your desires. The whole glorious, complicated, occasionally ridiculous human being that you are.

And here’s where it becomes especially beautiful: you’re not only present with yourself. You’re present with your lover.

You begin to notice their experience as it unfolds. Not because you’re trying to produce a particular response, but because you’re genuinely curious about the magnificent creature sharing this moment with you. You become less like a technician operating the machinery of pleasure and more like a musician listening for the next note in an exquisite duet.

Presence transforms lovemaking from something you do to someone into something you discover together.

In Tantric philosophy, the Divine isn’t waiting at the end of some long spiritual journey. The sacred can be encountered right here, in the living, breathing, shimmering reality of this moment. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, and not when you’ve finally achieved the perfect orgasm, but now.

And if the Divine happens to be hiding in the curve of your lover’s smile, well, wouldn’t it be a shame to miss it because you were busy concentrating on your technique?

When the Universe Climbs Into Bed With You

Now we’re getting to the really juicy stuff.

Ask experienced Tantric lovers about their most extraordinary encounters, and you may hear stories that sound less like conventional sex and more like dispatches from another dimension.

Some describe feeling as though the boundaries of their bodies have dissolved, leaving them connected to everything around them: every grain of sand on a distant beach, every leaf trembling in the forest, and every star glittering across the velvet heavens.

Others describe sensations of energy moving through their bodies like a whirling dervish, a river of molten light, or a shower of meteors streaking across the night sky. Some experience a profound sense of timelessness, in which an hour passes like a heartbeat or a single moment seems to stretch into eternity. Others describe images or sensations that feel like memories from another lifetime, or an overwhelming experience of love so immense that ordinary words seem hopelessly inadequate.

And sometimes the miracle is much quieter.

You look into the eyes of the person you’ve slept beside for twenty years and suddenly see them as though for the very first time. The lines around their eyes become beautiful. Their familiar scent becomes intoxicating. Their imperfect, aging, magnificent body becomes the most precious landscape you’ve ever explored.

You fall in love again, right there in your own bedroom.

These experiences aren’t guaranteed, of course, and they don’t need to be interpreted as literal journeys through time or space. They’re descriptions of the deeply subjective, sometimes mystical states that lovers may encounter.

But there’s something fascinating about what they have in common. They’re generally not experiences people can summon on command. You can’t schedule cosmic oneness for 9:15 p.m., right after brushing your teeth. You can’t order a kundalini awakening like a cocktail. And attempting to manufacture a mystical experience is simply performance dressed up in spiritual lingerie.

The paradox is that these extraordinary experiences may become possible when we stop demanding them. We soften, we listen, and we feel. We become available.

And sometimes the universe answers.

Presence Is the Secret to Making Love for Hours

When I tell couples that Tantra can teach them to make love for hours, I occasionally see a look of mild terror cross their faces.

Hours? Good Lord, woman. We have jobs! And knees!

But making love for hours doesn’t mean engaging in continuous intercourse, maintaining an erection for an afternoon, or performing an endless series of acrobatic maneuvers. It means expanding your understanding of what lovemaking actually is.

When you’re no longer racing toward orgasm, a whole new world opens up. A kiss can become an entire conversation. A hand resting over your lover’s heart can become an intimate exchange. You might spend twenty minutes simply breathing together, another twenty exploring the sensations of touch, and then find yourselves laughing hysterically about something that happened fifteen years ago.

You may become aroused, drift into tenderness, return to passion, fall into silence, or discover an entirely new way of touching one another. There is no prescribed itinerary. You’re not trying to maintain a constant state of sexual excitement. You’re allowing intimacy to ebb and flow like the tides beneath the moon.

And when arousal isn’t treated as something that must continuously escalate, your body has room to relax.

This can be especially liberating for couples navigating the changes of midlife. An erection that comes and goes doesn’t have to interrupt the lovemaking. A woman who needs more time to awaken her desire doesn’t have to feel she’s holding up the proceedings. A couple who discovers that penetration isn’t comfortable or desirable that evening hasn’t somehow failed.

Nothing has gone wrong. You’re simply listening to the bodies you have today rather than demanding they perform according to yesterday’s script.

Of course, pain or persistent sexual difficulties deserve appropriate care. Presence doesn’t mean ignoring your body’s needs. It means becoming sensitive enough to honor them.

And here’s another lovely possibility: when the pressure to perform diminishes, many couples find themselves feeling more relaxed, playful, and emotionally connected. Instead of monitoring whether the sex is going well, they can actually enjoy having it.

What a concept!

The Most Erotic Message You Can Give Your Lover

There’s another reason presence is so powerful, and it has very little to do with mystical fireworks.

Presence communicates love.

Think about the difference between being touched by someone who is preoccupied with what they’re going to do next and someone who is completely absorbed in experiencing you. One touch can feel mechanical, even when the technique is technically excellent. The other can feel like a love letter written directly onto your skin.

When you’re present, you notice the subtle changes in your lover’s breathing, the way their body softens beneath your hand, and the tiny movement that tells you they’d like a little more pressure, or perhaps a little less. You notice when their attention wanders, when they become emotional, when their desire rises, or when they simply want to be held.

And instead of following a predetermined sequence, you respond. You might pause and ask what they’re feeling. You might change the way you’re touching them. You might invite them to guide your hand.

Presence isn’t mind-reading. It’s a combination of awareness, curiosity, communication, and responsiveness. It’s the difference between dancing at someone and dancing with them.

Even if only one partner begins practicing presence, the quality of the encounter may change. One grounded, attentive lover can invite the other to slow down and settle into the moment, though genuine connection still requires respect for both people’s experience and choices.

And the message beneath all this attention is profoundly erotic: I see you. I feel you. Your experience matters to me. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

For many people, that kind of attention is more intoxicating than the most sophisticated sexual technique.

Three Tantric Presence Games to Play Tonight

Now, before you start imagining that presence requires twenty years of meditation, a Himalayan cave, and an advanced degree in Sanskrit, I have wonderful news.

You already know how to be present.

You’ve experienced it while watching a spectacular sunset, listening to music that moved you to tears, or becoming so absorbed in a delicious meal that conversation simply stopped.

Presence is a natural human capacity. We just need to remember how to bring it into our lovemaking.

Here are three of my favorite games to help you and your Beloved step out of performance and into the delicious wilderness of the present moment.

Game One: Two Bodies, One Breath

Begin by holding your Beloved close. You might lie together, sit facing one another, or curl into your favorite cuddling position. There’s no need to undress unless that feels inviting.

Take a moment to notice your own breathing, and then begin listening to your partner’s breath. Can you feel their chest rising and falling? Can you hear the soft whisper of air entering and leaving their body? Without forcing anything, see whether you can gently synchronize your breathing.

Inhale together, and then exhale together. Allow your bodies to find a comfortable shared rhythm. If your breathing patterns are naturally different, don’t struggle to match them perfectly. The intention is connection, not synchronized swimming.

As you settle into the rhythm, notice what begins to happen. Perhaps your shoulders relax, the constant chatter of your mind becomes quieter, or you begin to feel the warmth and weight of your lover’s body more vividly. Breathing together can help shift your attention away from the endless parade of thoughts and toward the sensations of your living body.

Imagine two ocean waves rising and falling beneath the same moon, two trees swaying in the same breeze, or two instruments discovering that they’ve been tuned to the same song.

And when your attention wanders, as it inevitably will, simply return to the breath. You don’t need to chase the thought away. Just let it float past like a cloud crossing the sky.

There is nothing to accomplish. There is only this breath, this body, and this beautiful person in your arms.

Game Two: The Constellation of Touch

This is one of my favorite ways to bring lovers into immediate awareness of their bodies.

Begin by noticing every place your body is touching your partner’s body. Not just the obvious places, but all of them.

Perhaps your cheek is resting against his, and you can feel the delightful contrast between his scratchy whiskers and your soft lips. Maybe your foot has wandered beneath the covers and discovered his toes. Perhaps your knee is brushing her thigh, your fingertips are resting against her shoulder, and a few strands of her hair are tickling your neck.

Notice the temperature, texture, pressure, and movement of each point of contact.

Now here’s the delicious challenge. Can you hold awareness of several of these sensations at the same time? Can you feel the softness of her belly beneath your hand while simultaneously noticing the warmth of her breath against your neck? Can you sense the weight of his arm around your waist while feeling the tiny movements of his fingers against your skin?

Imagine each point of contact as a star in a constellation. One star glows at your fingertips, another shimmers where your legs intertwine, and a third flickers where your lips meet his cheek. As your awareness expands, the constellation becomes brighter and more intricate.

And here’s something fascinating: the sensations were there all along. You simply weren’t noticing them.

What might happen if you brought this same quality of awareness to every kiss, every caress, and every embrace? Suddenly, the body you’ve touched a thousand times becomes an undiscovered galaxy.

You don’t need a new lover. You need new eyes. And new fingertips.

Game Three: Follow the Pleasure

Ah, now this is where things can become gloriously unpredictable.

Most of us approach lovemaking with some idea of where we think it’s supposed to go. A little kissing, a little touching, perhaps some oral pleasure, intercourse, orgasm, and curtain call.

But what if you threw away the itinerary? What if pleasure itself became your guide?

Begin by noticing something that feels genuinely good. It might be a particular touch, the sound of your lover’s voice, the feeling of warm sheets against your skin, or the pleasure of looking into one another’s eyes. It might even be a stream of conversation that makes you feel tender, connected, or deliciously mischievous.

Whatever it is, give it your attention. You might close your eyes and allow yourself to sink more deeply into the sensation.

What exactly feels good about it? Where do you feel that pleasure in your body? Does it have a temperature, a texture, or a rhythm? Does it feel like warm honey, cool water, a soft breeze, or a thousand tiny stars awakening beneath your skin?

And then, rather than deciding what should happen next, become curious. What would feel lovely now?

Perhaps you want more of the same touch. Perhaps you want to move closer, roll onto your back, or kiss your lover’s shoulder. Perhaps you suddenly feel like telling them how beautiful they are. Perhaps you want to laugh. Perhaps you want to stop touching altogether and simply bask in the deliciousness of being together.

Follow that thread, and invite your lover to follow theirs. Sometimes your desires will flow in the same direction. Sometimes they’ll differ, and you’ll have the opportunity to discover a new path together.

The essential ingredients are curiosity, mutual willingness, and the freedom to change direction.

Think of yourselves as two rivers meandering through an enchanted landscape. Sometimes your waters rush together. Sometimes they swirl gently around one another. Sometimes you settle into a quiet pool beneath the stars. Neither river is trying to reach the ocean before the other.

You’re simply enjoying the journey.

And who knows what hidden waterfalls, secret gardens, or shimmering caverns you might discover along the way?

When the Games Become a Dance, Let the Dance Lead

Now that you’ve met these three delightful little games, I want to invite you to do something rather adventurous: Let them mingle. Let them flirt with one another. Let them take you somewhere you never planned to go.

Perhaps you begin by synchronizing your breathing with your Beloved. As your bodies settle into a shared rhythm, you become aware of the warmth of his chest against yours, the gentle pressure of his hand on your back, and the way his cheek brushes your forehead. Without even thinking about it, you’ve slipped from the first game into the second.

Then, as you become more aware of those exquisite points of contact, you notice that one particular sensation feels especially delicious. Maybe it’s the way her fingertips are tracing little circles along your shoulder. You find yourself wanting to lean into that touch, to savor it, to discover where it might lead. And just like that, you’ve wandered into the third game.

But something else may be happening now. Your breathing has changed. Your lover has responded to your movement. A little current of pleasure is passing between you, growing and changing as naturally as sunlight dancing across the surface of a lake.

And suddenly, you realize that you’re no longer playing a game.

You’re making love.

Not according to a script, a technique, or a predetermined sequence, but according to the living, breathing intelligence of the connection unfolding between you.

This is the moment I want you to trust.

When the games begin to overlap and the energy of your connection starts to take on a life of its own, let go of the instructions. You don’t need to remember which game you’re playing or what you’re supposed to do next. The games have already done their job. They’ve brought you into the present, where your own senses, desires, and responsiveness can guide you.

It’s rather like learning to dance. At first, you’re concentrating on the steps, counting the beats, and trying not to trample your partner’s toes. But eventually the music finds its way into your body. You stop counting, your movements become spontaneous, and the dance seems to dance itself.

Or imagine launching a little sailboat onto a moonlit sea. The games are the gentle push that carries you away from shore. But once the wind fills your sails, you don’t need to keep paddling. You can feel the breeze, adjust your course together, and allow yourselves to be carried into the shimmering mystery of the night.

Perhaps the breathing game returns naturally as your bodies settle into a quieter rhythm. Perhaps a sudden burst of laughter interrupts a passionate kiss. Perhaps a wave of tenderness rises unexpectedly, and you find yourselves holding each other with tears in your eyes. Or perhaps your pleasure takes you into sensations so expansive and unfamiliar that you feel as though you’ve slipped beyond the boundaries of your ordinary selves.

You don’t need to decide which of these experiences is more Tantric, more erotic, or more worthwhile. Each is simply another expression of the intimacy you’re creating together.

And if you lose your sense of connection, there’s no need to struggle to get it back. You can always return to one of the games. Find your breath, notice a point of contact, or follow a small thread of pleasure. Consider them three friendly little doorways that are always available whenever you’d like to step back into the present.

The real magic begins when you trust yourselves enough to wander through those doorways and explore whatever lies beyond them.

The Lovers Who Never Reach the Finish Line

Imagine two lovers lying together beneath an open window. Outside, the night breeze moves through the trees. Somewhere in the distance, an owl calls, and moonlight spills across the bed like liquid silver.

They have nowhere to go, nothing to prove, and no particular experience they need to manufacture. One lover runs a hand slowly along the other’s back, feeling the warmth of the skin beneath their fingertips. The other sighs, turns closer, and rests a cheek against a familiar chest.

They breathe. They smile. Perhaps they kiss.

Perhaps desire rises between them like a tide, inviting them into a deeper exploration. Perhaps they find themselves talking about a dream they’ve never shared before. Perhaps they simply remain entwined, feeling the mysterious pleasure of being alive together.

The clock continues ticking, but they have stopped consulting it. They are not trying to get anywhere, and in that spaciousness, they discover something remarkable.

They have already arrived.

This, Beloveds, is the secret at the heart of Tantric lovemaking. It is not the ability to perform for hours, the mastery of a hundred exotic techniques, or even the promise of extraordinary orgasms or mystical journeys through the cosmos.

It is the willingness to meet life, love, and one another with such complete attention that the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

The universe is not waiting for you at the finish line. It is shimmering in your lover’s eyes, breathing beneath your fingertips, humming through your body, whispering through your heart, and opening like a flower beneath the warmth of your awareness.

The most exquisite ecstasy isn’t something you chase. It’s something you allow yourself to discover.

With love and a little cosmic mischief,
